Building Legacies . . . One Student at a Time

Pre-K Literacy Resources

  • Recognize and read environmental print.

Activity 1: Environmental Print Scavenger Hunt

Provide each learner with a list of items to find around the house that contain environmental print. Encourage them to search for labels on food items, book titles, logos on clothing, and any other text they can find.

Once they've found the items, have them bring them together to discuss what they found. Ask questions like:

    What did you find?

    Where did you find it?

    What does the text say?

Can you recognize any logos or symbols?

Develop early phonological awareness (awareness of the units of sound).

    Activity 1: Rhyme Time

Choose a picture book with rhymes or download nursery rhyme videos/songs.

Read or sing a rhyme together, emphasizing the rhyming words. Encourage learners to repeat the rhyming words after you. After reading/singing, ask questions like: What words rhymed in the story/song? Can you think of other words that rhyme with ____?

Demonstrate increasing knowledge of the alphabet.

    Activity 1: Letter Scavenger Hunt

Find letters around the house.  Write them down.  Ask your student, “What letter? What sound?”

    Activity 2: Flash Cards

Use the flash cards in your child’s purple folder and have your child identify those letters to you.

Write some letters of the alphabet.

    Activity 1: Name Writing

Write letters in their name with pencil, crayons, markers, colored pencils, and/or form with Play-Doh. (could also write last name, parents name, or siblings names)

Activity 2: Sticky Note Scavenger Hunt

Place letters on sticky notes around the house. Have your child go around and write those letters they find on a piece of paper.
